Become a drone pilot

To become a Part 107 pilot in Alabama, individuals need to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. This involves passing the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) knowledge test, and completing the application process through the FAA’s IACRA system

Here’s a breakdown of the process:

1. Eligibility:

  • Be at least 16 years old.

  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.

  • Be in a physical and mental condition to safely operate a drone.

2. Study for the Knowledge Test:

  • Prepare for the UAG knowledge test by reviewing study materials provided by the FAA

  • Consider taking a drone flight training class, either online or in-person, to help prepare.

  • Several resources offer online courses and practice exams, such as Drone Pilot Ground School and Pilot Institute

3. Obtain an FAA Tracking Number (FTN):

4. Schedule and Take the Knowledge Test:

  • Schedule your test at an FAA-approved testing center through PSI.

  • Bring a government-issued photo ID and your FTN to the test.

  • The test is 60 multiple-choice questions, and you need a score of 70% or higher to pass, according to Drone Pilot Ground School.

5. Complete FAA Form 8710-13:

6. Receive Your Remote Pilot Certificate:

  • Once the FAA approves your application and conducts a background check, you will receive a temporary certificate.

  • The permanent certificate will be mailed to you in about a month.
